Five Reasons Why Winter is the Best Time to Hike in Tasmania

You’d be forgiven for thinking that summer is the best season to hit the trail in Tasmania, but we’ve got a different take. We think winter is the best time to go for hike, especially down south in our neck of the woods, and here’s five reasons why.

Snow: okay not guaranteed in these climate-changing times, but if it has been snowing, there are plenty of walks in the Huon Valley where you can easily find yourself throwing a snowball or two.

Crowds: where is everyone? Europe probably. Which means the popular walks aren’t nearly as busy as they are during summer. It’s easy to park and you’re not constantly having to breathe in while you pass oncoming walkers on the narrow boardwalks.

Snakes: Along with the crowds, you’re probably not going to run into snakes either, well you’d be super unlucky to come across any. Still be mindful of course, but generally you’ll have snake-free peace of mind when you’re hiking during the colder months. As with snakes you can forget being bothered by flies, mozzies and jack jumpers, those nasty stinging ants on a winter walk too. Bug-free hikes - we’re here for it.

Health benefits: There’s so many, winter hiking gives your immune system boost, when you’re outside, you’re breathing in naturally filtered fresh air. Plus your body is burning more fat and using more calories to keep warm. You’ll also get a healthy does of vitamin D, which can be a struggle in winter. And getting outdoors and into nature is definitely a mood-booster.

It’s just more comfortable: No one likes to sweat profusely on a hike, and although you can still build up quite a sweat climbing those hills, it’s just much more pleasant in winter. Rug up with your favourite wooly beanie and mittens but not too much, as the saying goes, ‘be bold, start cold’’ you’ll soon warm up when you start moving.

One more thing - a bonus reason, there’s also less chance of dehydration in the cooler months, so you won’t be needing to lug as much water as you’d need on a hot summer’s day.
